Shu Jiao Fu Zhou
Shu Jiao Fu Zhou is a homey Fujianese restaurant known for its peanut butter noodles, meat-stuffed fishballs, homemade boiled dumplings, and wonton soups.
Nelson Wang, the current owner, immigrated to New York City in 2007. His parents are from the Fujian province in Southeastern China and started this neighborhood spot in 2005. Nelson previously worked as a computer engineer in Toronto but switched career fields to take over the family business. Shu Jiao Fu Zhou was originally located on Eldridge Street, a newer part of Manhattan’s Chinatown known as “Little Fuzhou.”
Over the years, the clientele at Shu Jiao Fu Zhou has slowly shifted. Nelson recalls that, in the beginning, most of his customers were Fujianese immigrants that lived nearby. But nowadays, an increasing number of Fujianese immigrants have moved to other Chinatowns in Queens and Brooklyn. His current clientele is a mix of native New Yorkers and Chinese immigrants. Despite the changing demographic, Nelson keeps his prices low to cater to the local working-class immigrant community.
Make sure to stop by Shu Jiao Fu Zhou next time you’re in Chinatown for a taste of Fuzhou. They recently opened a new location in Flushing as well!
P.S. We love their affordable frozen dumplings that come in four varieties (pork & chive, pork & cabbage, chicken & chive, chicken & mushroom). Make sure to try their homemade chili oil. It’s not too spicy and pairs perfectly with anything on their menu.
