Eight Jane Food Inc.
Just a couple of blocks over from the Flushing-Main Street 7 train station, you can find Eight Jane Food, a Chinese female-owned small business known for its savory jianbing guozi (Chinese crepe). When you enter the shop, you will likely be greeted by Sunnie, the owner of Eight Jane, as she briskly pours mung bean with millet wheat batter over specialized hot plates. As the mixture starts to solidify, two eggs are cracked on top, and fresh scallions are scattered onto the batter mixture. The thin crepe is then flipped over, and fillings such as youtiao (deep-fried savory donut stick), xiang chang (Chinese sausage), or bao cui (deep-fried cracker) can be tucked inside.
When Sunnie immigrated to Flushing from China in 2009, she noticed a few Southern Chinese food businesses but did not find Northern Chinese cuisine as easily. Sunnie, who grew up with Tianjin and Shanghainese parents, loved eating jianbing and learned how to make it from a young age. With the added motivation of learning how to make a living in an entirely new country, Sunnie found a braised meat shop that was closing in 2015 and turned it into what Eight Jane is today. Sunnie’s older sister, husband, and aunt have all pitched in to help with the booming Chinese breakfast-to-go business.
Seven years later, Eight Jane continues to grow a loyal following as lines consistently form outside through all weather conditions. Aside from jianbing, Eight Jane also sells cha ye dan (tea egg), niu rou jian bing (beef pancake), and dou jiang (savory soy milk). Check out Eight Jane Food during your next visit to Flushing, and don’t forget to say hi to Sunnie as well!
