Hay Hay Trio (Barbequed Pork, Over-Easy Egg, and Choy Sum over Rice)

Hay Hay Roasted is a Guangzhou-style Chinese barbeque restaurant that opened in early 2021. The rows of chicken, duck, and pork hanging in the front window are the basis of most of their dishes. Hay Hay Roasted prides itself on the quality of traditional roast meats while adding a contemporary feel to its decor and design.

After 42 years, Hoy Wong, the restaurant originally at 81 Mott, closed its doors. Known for its Cantonese-style roast meats, it was popular with tourists and locals, including David and Sindy, a husband and wife duo who saw an opportunity to start their own business and continue Hoy Wong’s legacy.

David and Sindy have strong ties to Chinatown. When they first immigrated to the United States as teenagers, they lived and eventually met in Chinatown. Originally from Malaysia, David has previously worked as a general manager in the restaurant industry for over 16 years, and his family also owns restaurants and cafes. His years of experience prepared him to take on the challenge of opening a restaurant in Chinatown during a pandemic.

They’ve put a modern twist on things – from inventing new menu items to updating the decor and even putting a spin on the packaging of their drinks. As a nod to Hoy Wong’s Chinese name, which included the character for happiness, David and Sindy named their restaurant Hay Hay Roasted – “hay” being the Cantonese pronunciation of happiness. Their logo is also a play on the Chinese character for double happiness and its similarity to the word “love” in English.

Make sure you try their crispy pork, one of their best sellers, and their new takes on old classics, like their Peking Duck Bun and David’s favorite, the Hay Hay Trio (barbequed pork, an over-easy egg, and choy sum over rice). They’re continuously updating their menu, so keep an eye out for their new dishes!
