It is a great history of Chinatowns across the USA as well as New York. MSG points out so many interesting details about the people and streetscape. They also note cool shops and restaurants to try. There are so many and it is good to see this area thriving. Highly recommended.
— Anna

I really enjoyed Chloe's tour, which had a real personal feel to it, and I especially appreciated her call-outs to people from the community who have fought to keep it strong and vibrant. I'm a life-long New Yorker and tutored in Chinatown, but still learned many things I didn't know. Highly recommended!

Chloe was a fantastic guide, and walked through the history of the Chinese American diaspora and it’s struggles throughout the years. I really enjoyed how personal the experience was as she outlined the history of the neighborhood, and related her personal experiences (going to piano lessons as a kid, and getting dumplings in a certain place in Chinatown) throughout the tour. I highly recommend having her as a guide if you’re ever interested in visiting Chinatown.

Wonderful tour and excellent hosts. Chloe was so funny and told such interesting stories. She made the tour very fascinating and personable and gave everyone lots of attention to our needs. The stories of the Chinese American experience are underrepresented and need to be told. The murals were interesting to analyze and discuss.

Chinatown is one of those places that you think you know already because you have visited, seen in some movies before or heard stories about but this tour really takes you to another level. Chloe not only explained to us with great passion the history of the neighborhood and of the Chinese migration to NYC and the US, but she explained also to us the challenges of the present times and the impact of the covid 19 pandemic together with the number of bottom-up initiatives of renovation the community is going through. She showed us shops and experiences of young people that decided to come back to their community of origin, fighting prejudices and stereotypes and helping to change the narrative with their living experience. Absolutely recommended!
— Viviana
-

This was a wonderful, educational experience! From start to finish, the storytelling and history that was shared was really well done. I had no clue about the history of Chinatown in NYC nor the history of Chinese immigrants in America and how they contributed to building this country up. Highly recommend this tour to everyone who visits NY.
— Niko

Soooo knowledgeable. I'm from San Francisco and even learned so much about the connections between our Chinatowns and Asian America in general. I felt that every single detail could be connected and explained, including murals and current issues and life. Appreciated the small touches, including how many Chinatown residents now celebrate Qing Ming / Cheng Beng. Would so recommend to those visiting NYC, or anyone interested in our Asian American history.
— Sebastian
-
Great, informational tour of Manhattan CT. Lots of trusted recommendations and the tour guides have actually interviewed/interacted with the local shop owners.
— Ashley
-
Chloe was a wonderful tour guide! Our whole family (kids ages 9-15) loved the tour, which included lots of NYC Chinatown history, but also a sampling of current spots which represent the neighborhood’s rejuvenation and resilience after the pandemic.

What an adorable walk with Chloe! I would never learnt the stories behind the scenes if I did not attend this tour. Chloe introduced tons of information of Chinatown blended with her own experience and attitudes, which inspire everyone to consider what we could contribute to our communities. Definitely a highlight in New York City!

Mott Street Girls NYC Chinatown Tour was historically rich and thoughtfully narrated by Chloe. I learned so much about my Chinese heritage within the context of NYC and the US at large. Chloe not only considered race and heritage but also gender and labor issues. Chloe’s personality is warm and insightful. I highly suggest this tour for a rare intersectional take on Asian American history and struggles! 🧧🥰
— Shannon
-
We had a very nice afternoon strolling through Chinatown with Chloe and Liz (the Mott Street Girls). The places they took us were very unique and they were very nice to us explaining a lot about the Asian community in NYC, the different types of food, stories about the past and the present…all very entertaining. They really know the area and they share a lot of information with their guests. The food is really good too! Suggestion: go there hungry! There is a lot of food involved! 😃 Would recommend this experience to visitors but also to those Newyorkers who, maybe , don’t know Chinatown that well. Great job, ladies!
— Claudia
-
Do you want that intimate feeling with someone who loves their New York Chinese culture and wants to share it? Do you want to support young women who are active in the Chinatown community? This is the tour for you! Mott Street Girls informed us of the impact of the Chinese Exclusion Act the still reverberates now and the resilience of the people who inhabit, work and thrive in this community.

Important history worthy of a tour. Really elevated my awareness of this communities contribution to our American experience
— Eileen
-
This tour was fun, educational and super interesting. Chloe is extremely gifted as a tour guide. We have always loved Chinatown but had no idea frankly of the struggles and discrimination the Chinese have lived with in the US. Against huge odds, people of Chinatown have brought great value to America and should be celebrated for more than good food. Such an enlightening and enjoyable day💕.
— Tracy
-
Excellent tour with lots of background I really enjoyed the tour!

It was clear immediately that Chloe and The Mott Street Girls care deeply about this community. They are not only skilled educators but super friendly and passionate about showcasing the rich culture and history of the neighborhood. We are very local and yet had no idea how little we really knew. It also felt great to support a group dedicated to collecting and preserving the stories of the people of this amazing place. The experience and the food are some of the best NYC have to offer. Don't hesitate you won't regret it.

I have been to Chinatown in New York previously but could not remember much as it was years ago. When I came across the MSG listing and the good reviews I thought it would be good to see Chinatown again from a different perspective. You can tell that Chloe is very prepared with her facts and photos on an iPad. Her stories kept the group very engaged. She knows the area very well and is helpful with recommendations on food! Having been on the tour I feel I get to know Chinatown much better in terms of history, culture, and even current issues! Highly recommend this tour if you would like to see Chinatown from a different perspective!
— Tracy

Very wonderful experience. I do feel I have a deeper understanding of Chinatown's culture and history after Chloe's introduction and explanation. I am really impressed by the fact that first-generation Chinese immigrants overcame a lot of difficulties and finally lived in the U.S. It is the spirit of Chinese culture that makes Chinese people able to live in every part of the world.

This tour was humbling and fascinating all at once. I learned so much about Chinatown’s history and Chinese Americans’ challenging journey. Despite the oppressive Chinese Exclusion Act, this incredible community continues to thrive. Chloe was a great host; she provided us with photos and so many stories. I highly recommend this tour to everyone. After all, this IS American history.

Great tour Chloe did a fabulous job!

Took many walking tours throughout the city this last trip. While they were all terrific, Chloe's tour was one of the highlights of my entire trip. Historically it is important to learn more about what is seldom covered in the classroom. The Chinese immigration experience, the Chinese Exclusion Act, the history of Manhattan's Chinatown in pre and post-pandemic times, the story behind the recent art murals on buildings, the shops, and restaurants that have been owned by the same families for generations. Chloe does a wonderful job of weaving family stories, history, laws, trivia, photographs--all while walking and stopping at significant sites, statues, buildings, or to show photographs on her iPad. You do not have to be Chinese to appreciate this tour. It is for anyone who is interested in history, culture. After Chloe's tour, we visited the Tenement Museum within walking distance. I highly recommend doing both. Thank you, Chloe, this passion project of yours is truly a gem. And thank you so much for being available to accommodate our family. A+++
— Marcia

Chloe was a wonderful host in taking us around locations in Chinatown. Despite me growing up and walking around Chinatown in the past as a student, I have a deeper appreciation for the culture of some locations and about how the younger generation is bringing Chinatown to a "modern" state. I definitely learned more about the culture and history of Chinese in the US and am excited to help support more AAPI efforts too!
— Eric

Don't miss the chance to learn from these fascinating folks! Great connection of how some of the terrible prejudice of the 1890s is really not so different than today's reality.

Phenomenal experience of walking around old Chinatown, feeling those streets, that vibe, all the history. Chloe was incredibly well prepared, with visuals, good pace, and a very well curated walk through the history of the local area, but also New York, the USA, the world, and how it is all connected. Top-notch storytelling! Being in New York for the first time, I can't recommend this enough for an awesome outing for anyone visiting the Big Apple.

I had the most enjoyable and educational time on this experience! Chloe was friendly and very informative. She showed us the historical and cool places in Chinatown, New York, from the oldest working restaurant to the harsh conditions that Chinese immigrants experienced from the late 19th century to the 20th century. While on tour, she used her iPad and PowerPoint to show old-age photos of people living in Chinatown. And at the end of the experience, she provided us with printouts of restaurants and other places to visit. Overall, it was a wonderful and educational experience! ^^

A fantastic tour that goes into not only the history of Chinatown but also the history of the Chinese in America. Our guide was incredibly knowledgeable and took us to many stops relating to both topics. She is really sweet. I got lost on the way to our meeting spot and she was kind to call and give me directions. And she waited for me too before starting out. At the end of the tour, she provided a list of restaurants and shops in Chinatown to see on our own.

I originally chose this tour because I wanted to learn more about the culture and history of Chinatown and the history of Chinese immigration to the U.S. The tour did not disappoint. There was history all the way back to the first Chinese immigrants and the laws surrounding immigration at that time. We also got to see the oldest shops, restaurants, and community centers in Chinatown. Our guide Chloe knew the area incredibly well but also came with a slide deck to show pictures of historical Chinatown and show how it has changed over the last 150 years. Afterward, Chloe sent us recommendations for the best Chinese food in our neighborhood as well as in Chinatown. I would highly recommend this tour.

Great tour! Easy to find starting point? Check. Thorough and interesting tour? Check. Even a bonus presentation with an iPad as most tours are just the guide talking and walking. Definitely worth the $18 as the tour was very thorough and provided some additional context not just on the topic of the Chinese Exclusion Act, but some additional tidbits about Chinatown as well. Also, it's in Chinatown, so you can shop/eat afterward!
— Alex
