Day of Healing for API women and femmes in honor of Christina Yuna Lee

  • Apex for Youth 195 Chrystie Street, #200 New York, NY, 10002 United States (map)

On Sunday February 12th at 4pm, Angry Asian Womxn will be organizing a day of healing for Asian Pacific Islander Women, Femmes and those affected by gendered violence, in remembrance of Christina Yuna Lee. The location will be held at and cosponsored by Apex for Youth on 195 Chrystie Street, Suite #200. In the early morning of Feb 13th, Christina was murdered in her home about a month after Michelle Go’s death. In New York City this was a time of heightened anti-Asian racism and misogyny.

The day will consist of self defense instruction from the women of Dragon Combat Club, chair yoga , a first aid workshop, sound bathing and meditation by Erin Rae , community conversation, food, drink, tea, self defense tools, ear seeds by Melissa Soong and more. We checked in with Christina’s family for approval and all proceeds will go towards paying for the event, to Angry Asian Womxn to purchase more self defense tools and to the Christina Alliance.

They Can’t Burn Us All (TCBUA) will also be hosting letter writing to GuiYing Ma’s family. GuiYing Ma was attacked on November 26th, 2021 in Elmhurst and succumbed to her injuries on February 22, 2022. The letters will be sent to her family to wish them a happy Lunar New Year and other well wishes.

Amanda Phingbodhipakkiya will have a participatory altar, honoring the NYC API women we lost last year. You will have an opportunity to write notes to hang on the altar, and please bring any items you’d like to put up on the altar. We will walk whatever offerings the few blocks down to where Christina used to live. If you leave money on the altar, it will be given to the Christina Alliance.

This day of remembrance is purely a community event for and by Asian Pacific Islander women, femmes and those affected by gendered violence. We ask that all attendees identify as Asian Pacific Islander women, femmes or those affected by gendered violence, so we can foster a safe space free of judgement, racism, and misogyny during such a sensitive time. We want to build community and heal ourselves amongst our fellow Angry Asian Womxn. Thank you for your understanding.

The event space is a second story walk up, however if you need to use the elevator, please contact us and you will be accommodated. Bathrooms are ADA compliant.

Children under 13 are free. Please contact us if you’ll be bringing any kids and we will provide them with some activity books.

There will be zero tolerance of any anti-Black and transphobic sentiments. You will be taken off the event if this term is violated. Angry Asian Womxn strives to create a safe space for all folks of Asian and Pacific Island descent who identify as women or as femmes. However we will not tolerate any hatred towards any other marginalized groups, especially our Black community members. We also uplift our trans and non binary sisters and siblings as gender violence can affect them in a greater way.
