NYC Chinatown Mooncake Guide (2021)

Mid-Autumn Festival (中秋節) is on September 21st this year, the 15th day of the eighth lunar month! It’s believed that the moon is the fullest and brightest on this day. People celebrate it by spending time with family, lighting paper lanterns, gazing at the moon, and eating mooncakes.

There are many regional variations of the mooncake throughout Asia. In Southern China, Cantonese-style mooncakes are sweet and filled with lotus seed or red bean paste. In Suzhou, Hangzhou, and Shanghai, mooncakes are savory and filled with minced meat. In Southeast Asia, mooncakes are filled with durian and pandan.

Don’t know where to get your mooncakes? We gotchu! Here are our top recommendations in Chinatown.
