Artbean Coffee

Iced Ube Latte with Coconut Milk

Artbean Coffee is a coffee shop serving specialty coffee while supporting local artists. It officially opened its doors last Sunday.

The owners both come from creative backgrounds. Spencer, originally from Nevada, worked in the Bay Area as an animator before moving to NYC over a decade ago. Khanh is from Vietnam and lived in Canada before moving to NYC to study and work as an interior designer.

Spencer and Khanh met in NYC, fell in love, and started Artbean Coffee as an e-commerce business during the pandemic. Artbean combines their shared love for coffee and art and their belief that the two can bring people together. Headquartered in the Brooklyn Navy Yards, they small-batch roasted their single-origin coffee beans and partnered with local artists to design the packaging. However, they soon realized that their online business was missing a personal touch as they couldn't connect with their customers in person. They started to host pop-up events while working towards opening their own coffee shop one day.

When Hong Kong Barber Shop moved across the street and vacated its storefront, they immediately contacted the landlord to pitch their business idea. There couldn't have been a more perfect location for their business than the colorful Doyers Street with its murals and lanterns. Khanh used her background to design the space, choosing to expose the brick wall to honor the history of the building they are in.

The couple envisions that Artbean will serve as not only a community gathering space but also an art gallery for artists and creatives to showcase and sell their work. For their first exhibition, they partnered with Oakland-based artist Jocelyn Tsaih. 10% of the proceeds from the collaboration will be donated to Soar Over Hate.

Signature drinks include the soba latte and ube latte (served hot or cold). Khanh recommends pairing the ube latte with coconut milk as both ingredients are from the tropics.

There's a latte to love about this new business on the block, from the warm hospitality to the creative space. Make sure to stop by this weekend, and don't forget to say hi to Spencer and Khanh!
